Have you ever witnessed the heartwarming power of a mother’s love? Get ready to be touched by the incredible story of a brave mama cat named Scruffy (we’ll get to the name in a minute!) and her precious kittens.
It all began when animal rescuers at a shelter in Downey, California, received a call about a litter of 10-day-old kittens found abandoned in someone’s yard. Sadly, their mama cat got scared by people approaching and ran away, leaving her tiny babies all alone.
Thankfully, the shelter workers at Wrenn Rescues, a kind-hearted animal rescue organization, knew these kittens needed special care.
Since they were so young, they needed bottle-feeding and round-the-clock attention. But before whisking them away, the shelter workers had a great idea.
“We try to leave kittens with their mothers whenever possible,” shared Ashley, a foster volunteer at Wrenn Rescues. “Mama cats provide the best care for their young, and taking them away can actually harm the kittens’ health.”
Networking Saves the Day!
With time running out and no foster parents available locally, the shelter put out a call for help through their network.
Thankfully, a wonderful woman named CJ stepped up and volunteered to transport the fragile kittens all the way to Ventura County, where experienced fosterers Ashley and Jenifer Hurt, the rescue’s co-founder, were waiting.
Ashley and Jenifer were all prepped to bottle-feed the little ones, but fate had something even more special in store.
The Search for Scruffy
Remember the scared mama cat who vanished when people approached? Well, the rescuers at the Downey shelter hadn’t forgotten about her!
They knew how important reuniting a mother with her kittens is, so they kept an eye out for Scruffy around the area where the kittens were found.
And guess what? Their persistence paid off! They managed to trap Scruffy and bring her back to the shelter the next day. But would she recognize her babies after being separated?
A Purrfect Reunion
Scruffy was understandably nervous when she arrived at the shelter. But everything changed when Ashley brought one of the kittens close to her.
“The moment Scruffy saw her baby, she visibly relaxed,” Ashley said, her voice filled with warmth. “We gently opened her carrier, and she immediately went straight to her kittens, purring loudly. It was like they never missed a beat!”
The kittens, sensing their mama’s presence, wasted no time in nuzzling up to her and starting to nurse. The scene was pure magic – a beautiful reunion filled with purrs, cuddles, and the undeniable bond of love between a mother and her precious babies.

Ashley woke up the next morning to the most heartwarming sound: the happy purring of Scruffy, contentedly nursing her kittens.
“Nothing compares to a mother’s love and care,” Ashley shared with a smile. “These kittens are not only healthy and thriving, but they are also the happiest and luckiest babies we’ve ever seen!”

Well, while the shelter workers initially didn’t know her name, they noticed she looked a little “unpolished” – like someone who hadn’t had the luxury of regular grooming!
