Have you ever seen a kitten so small it could fit in your hand? That was Lucy! This little fighter came into foster care with her brothers, but unlike them, Lucy was minuscule and battling health issues.
A Tiny Kitten in a Big World
Jamie, a dedicated foster mom who works with Baby Kitten Rescue, took on the challenge of caring for Lucy and her brothers.
At five weeks old, Lucy weighed a mere 128 grams, the same as some newborn kittens! This meant she was very underdeveloped and had pneumonia, making breathing difficult.
Big Heart, Big Will to Survive
Despite her size, Lucy had a mighty spirit. Jamie bottle-fed her and closely monitored her medication. Within two days, Lucy surprised everyone! She went from being lethargic to a ball of energy, even making adorable “biscuits” with her tiny paws. She still needed lots of rest, but her progress was a huge step forward.
A Tiny Setback, But Not a Defeat
Unfortunately, Lucy’s breathing remained shallow even after the pneumonia cleared. A visit to the vet revealed Flat Chested Kitten Syndrome, a condition where the rib cage doesn’t form correctly.
Thankfully, this could be managed at home with a tiny splint to help her chest develop properly.
Braces for a Breath of Fresh Air
Lucy may have looked a bit silly in her little splint, but it didn’t stop her purring and playing! After nearly a month, Lucy’s weight finally reached a whole pound – a massive accomplishment for this tiny warrior! Even better, the splint worked like a charm. Her chest rounded out, and she could finally breathe easily!
Brothers Get Adopted, But Wait, There’s More!
Great news arrived for Lucy’s brothers, Brian and Patrick – they were adopted! But Lucy had a surprise of her own. When the family learned about their tiniest sibling, they wanted to adopt her too!
Lots of Love Until Reunited
Since Lucy still needed some recovery time, she stayed with Jamie for a while longer. Jamie showered her with extra cuddles and playtime to make up for being alone.
A Happy Ending (Almost) in Sight
This little fighter’s story is a heartwarming testament to perseverance and love. Lucy’s journey reminds us that even the smallest creatures can have the biggest hearts.
While she waits to reunite with her brothers in their forever home, Lucy is soaking up all the love her foster mom has to offer.
