This Black Cat Finds Luck After Seemingly Spending An Eternity At The Shelter

This Black Cat Finds Luck After Seemingly Spending An Eternity At The Shelter

Plankton, a black cat with a heart of gold and a kidney condition, had a rough start in life. Rescued as a kitten from a hoarding situation, he ended up at the Ulster County SPCA along with over 100 other cats.

Poor Plankton was sick, and after a lot of tests, he was diagnosed with kidney failure. But this little furball was a fighter! He beat the odds and survived, but his health struggles left him with special medical needs that made finding a home a challenge.

You see, Plankton needed a special kind of family, one willing to give him a little extra care. This involved a 10-minute infusion of medicine three times a week, which, let’s face it, isn’t everyone’s idea of fun. So, Plankton waited. And waited. He watched as other cats came and went, but he never gave up hope.

As the years rolled by, Plankton became a beloved fixture at the shelter. The staff and volunteers adored him, but they also knew he deserved a home of his own. After 2,432 days (yes, you read that right, over six years!), Plankton’s luck changed.

Ashlee Houghtaling and her mother Ann stumbled upon an article about older shelter pets. It was Plankton’s smiling face that stole their hearts.

The fact that he needed a little extra care didn’t scare them away; in fact, it drew them closer. They had lost their own beloved dog to renal failure, so they knew exactly what Plankton needed.

“I thought it was so sad that no one was adopting him because he had a medical condition,” Ashlee said. “The fact that he had been there for so long – it really hit home for me. Sick cats need homes too.”

And just like that, Plankton’s life turned around. He went from being a long-term resident of the Ulster County SPCA to the newest member of the Houghtaling family. He even gained two cat siblings, Nutmeg and Boots!

Plankton’s story reminds us that sometimes, the best things in life are worth waiting for. It also shows us that love knows no bounds, even when a little extra care is needed.

So, here’s to Plankton, the black cat who defied the odds and found his forever family. May his days be filled with cuddles, treats, and all the love a cat could ask for!
